Self-funded opportunities

Driven by our cross-faculty research institutes, our interdisciplinary approach promotes extensive collaboration and ensures our courses and research span diverse areas, enabling you to discover unique opportunities beyond conventional academic structures.

What is self funded study?

Self-funding your studies means that you are not in receipt of a University scholarship, and are either paying the fees yourself, or you have secured funding for your degree yourself (either through a or sponsorship from an external organisation). Unless the PhD project has already been defined you will be responsible for devising your own research project and writing your own research proposal, and for finding a suitable supervisor. You should only devise a PhD project and proposal to undertake at Âéw¶¹´«Ã½ if it fits with Âéw¶¹´«Ã½ research priorities and there is a supervisor with a similar research interest.

Pre-defined self-funded projects

These are projects that have already been defined with a supervisory team in place, so you won’t have to search for a supervisor, but you will need to meet certain criteria in order for your application to be successful. As these are self-funded opportunities, you will not be awarded any funding if you are appointed, so you will need to fund your studies yourself.

Current pre-defined projects:

  1. Picturing Climate: Art and Photography's Role in Interdisciplinary Climate Research

  2. Data-Driven Cyber Security Investment

  3. The development of pharmaceutical freeze-drying production methods using novel process analytical technology. A self-funded PhD programme

What we’re looking for

At Âéw¶¹´«Ã½ our research is organised into Research and Innovation Institutes (RIIs). If you are planning to propose your own PhD project, we suggest you look at the work of our RIIs to understand where best your idea might fit. You can also use our findasupervisor tool to search for an academic with similar research interests to yours. You’ll need to contact them first before applying.
